Russia Visa Invitation for
Italian Citizens — 2026 Guide

Italian citizens can choose between the Russian e-visa (up to 30 days, no invitation needed) or a traditional tourist visa with an official invitation letter. This guide explains both routes — and one important detail about applying in Italy that most people miss.

Planning a trip to Russia from Italy? Italian passport holders have two options — the fast and simple Russian e-visa for short visits, or the traditional tourist visa for longer stays and multiple entries. This guide covers everything you need to know in 2026, including one important detail specific to Italy: direct applications to most Russian consulates in Italy are not possible — you need to go through a visa centre.

1. E-visa or traditional visa — which to choose?

Italy is one of 64 countries whose citizens are eligible for the Russian e-visa. For most short trips this is the easiest option. Here is how the two routes compare:

✓ Available to Italians

E-visa

Single entry · Up to 30 days · 100% online

  • No consulate visit required
  • No invitation letter needed
  • No hotel booking needed
  • Costs approx. $52 USD
  • Processed in 4 calendar days
  • Valid 120 days from issue date
  • Travel insurance mandatory
For longer stays

Traditional visa

Single / Double / Multiple · Up to 90 days

  • Apply via visa centre in Italy
  • Invitation letter required
  • Stay up to 90 days
  • Double and multiple entry available
  • Biometrics required in person
  • Processing 4–20 working days

Choose the e-visa if: your trip is up to 30 days, you are travelling for tourism, and you want the fastest and simplest process.

Choose the traditional visa if: you want to stay longer than 30 days, need to enter Russia more than once, or plan to visit Belarus and return to Russia on the same trip.

Russia + Belarus 2026

Since 2025, a Russian tourist visa is also valid for entry to Belarus — and vice versa. You can travel between both countries by land, rail or air on the same visa. This applies to traditional visas only, not the e-visa.

2. What is the tourist invitation letter?

If you apply for a traditional tourist visa, you need an official tourist invitation letter — also called visa support, tourist voucher or confirmation. It is a mandatory document issued by an accredited Russian tour operator and submitted as part of your visa application.

The invitation consists of two parts delivered as one PDF:

  • Tourist Confirmation (Подтверждение) — confirms your visit, dates and host company details
  • Tourist Voucher (Ваучер) — contains your passport data, stay duration and the operator's accreditation number

At ivisastore.com, both documents are generated automatically and delivered to your email within 5 minutes of payment. A printed colour copy is accepted at all Russian visa centres in Italy — no original by post required.

Official accreditation

Invitations from ivisastore.com are issued by Visa Service LLC, accreditation number RTO 015681. Accepted by all Russian consulates and visa centres in Italy without exception.

Italy has four Russian diplomatic representations — but direct applications at most of them are not accepted. For Rome, Milan and Genoa, applications must be submitted through the official Russian Visa Application Centre (VHS Italy). Only Palermo accepts direct applications by appointment.

8. Frequently asked questions

Can I apply directly at the Russian consulate in Rome or Milan?

No. Direct applications at the consulates in Rome, Milan and Genoa are not accepted for most visa categories. You must submit your documents through the VHS Visa Application Centre in your city. The only exception is Palermo, where the consulate accepts applications directly by appointment.

Do Italian citizens need an invitation letter for the e-visa?

No. The Russian e-visa is fully online and does not require an invitation letter, hotel booking or flight tickets. You only need a valid passport, a digital photo and travel insurance. The invitation is only required for the traditional tourist visa.

Can I visit Belarus with my Russian tourist visa?

Yes — since 2025, Russian and Belarusian tourist visas are mutually recognised. A traditional Russian visa allows entry to Belarus and vice versa. You can travel between both countries by land, rail or air on the same visa. This does not apply to the e-visa.

Is a printed copy of the invitation enough or do I need the original?

A printed colour copy of the invitation PDF is accepted at all Russian visa centres in Italy. You do not need to send an original by post. Simply print the document you receive by email and bring it to your appointment.

What if I made a mistake in my invitation?
