Applying for a Russian tourist visa is straightforward — but only when your documents are complete and correct. A single missing item or a mismatch between documents is enough for the consulate to return your application. This guide gives you the complete, detailed document list so you can prepare everything right first time.
One important rule before you start
Always get your invitation letter before filling in the visa application form. The form asks for the host company name, address, confirmation number and voucher number — all of which come from your invitation. Starting the form without the invitation is the most common mistake.
1. Complete documents checklist
📋 Russian Tourist Visa — Documents Checklist 2026
Valid passport
Biometric · valid for at least 6 months after visa expiry date · at least 2 blank facing pages · no damage, tears or heavy staining
Tourist invitation letter (Tourist Confirmation + Voucher)
Issued by an accredited Russian tour operator (RTO 015681) · delivered as PDF · printed in colour · contains confirmation number, voucher number, host company name and address
Completed visa application form
Filled in online at visa.kdmid.ru · printed (most consulates: double-sided) · signed by hand in ink · date written by hand · not digitally signed
Passport photo
35×45mm · colour · white or off-white background · taken within 6 months · neutral expression · no glasses · glued (not stapled) to the designated space on the form
Passport copy
Clear photocopy of the bio data page · accepted by most consulates alongside the original
Travel insurance certificate
Mandatory for EU/Schengen and many other nationalities · minimum €30,000 coverage · explicitly covers the Russian Federation · valid for the full duration of stay · not required for US and Canadian citizens
Consular fee payment
Amount varies by nationality, visa type and processing speed · paid at the consulate or visa centre · non-refundable · some consulates accept only money orders (Canada)
2. Document 1 — Passport requirements in detail
Passport
Original required at submission
Must be a biometric (machine-readable) passport
Valid for at least 6 months after the visa expiry date — not after your return date
At least 2 blank, clean, unmarked pages sitting side by side
Bring a clear photocopy of the bio data page alongside the original
Damaged passport (torn pages, water damage, faded ink, missing chip) = rejection
Fewer than 2 blank pages = rejection
Expired or expiring too soon = rejection
Check the 6-month rule carefully
If you apply for a 30-day visa starting November 1, your visa expires November 30. Your passport must be valid until at least May 30 of the following year — that is 6 months after November 30. Many applicants miscalculate this and get caught out.
3. Document 2 — Tourist invitation letter
Tourist Invitation Letter
Tourist Confirmation + Tourist Voucher — both in one PDF
Must be issued by a Russian tour operator registered in the Federal Tourism Register (RTО)
Contains your full name, passport number, nationality, travel dates and host company details
Must include the confirmation number and voucher number (used to fill in the visa form)
Printed in colour — a colour printout of the PDF is accepted at most consulates worldwide
No hotel booking or flight tickets required to obtain it
Invitation from an unregistered operator = automatic rejection
Name spelling in invitation differs from passport = rejection
Dates in invitation do not cover dates in your application = rejection

4. Document 3 — Visa application form
Visa Application Form
Completed at visa.kdmid.ru
Fill in online at visa.kdmid.ru — select your country of application at the start
Enter host company name, address, confirmation number and voucher number exactly as shown in your invitation
Print on A4 — most consulates require double-sided printing
Sign and date by hand in ink after printing
Glue your passport photo to the designated box on the form
Do not fill in the form before receiving your invitation
Digital signature not accepted — must be handwritten
Any blank mandatory field = form returned or rejected
The form must match the invitation exactly
Every detail in the application form — travel dates, host company, purpose of visit — must be consistent with your invitation letter. Even a one-day difference between the dates in the form and the dates in the invitation can cause rejection.
5. Document 4 — Passport photo requirements
Passport Photo
1 photo required · glued to the application form
Size: 35×45mm (standard passport photo size)
Colour · printed on photographic paper
White or off-white background
Taken within the last 6 months — must reflect your current appearance
Full face, looking directly at camera, neutral expression
No glasses, no hats or caps (except for religious reasons)
Glued to the form — not stapled
Photo older than 6 months = may be rejected
Smiling, glasses, head covering (non-religious) = rejected
Coloured or dark background = rejected
6. Document 5 — Travel insurance
Travel Insurance Certificate
Mandatory for EU/Schengen nationalities · recommended for all
Must explicitly cover the Russian Federation — generic worldwide policies sometimes exclude Russia
Minimum coverage: €30,000 (some consulates require higher)
Valid from your planned entry date to your planned exit date — must cover the full duration of stay
Must include emergency medical treatment and medical evacuation
Printed certificate required — screenshot of an app is not accepted
Policy that excludes Russia = not accepted
Coverage that starts after your entry date or expires before your exit date = rejected
7. Insurance requirements by nationality
| Nationality group | Insurance status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| EU / Schengen countries | Mandatory | Min. €30,000 · covers full stay |
| United Kingdom | Mandatory | Min. €30,000 · covers full stay |
| France | Mandatory | Required for both e-visa and traditional visa |
| Australia | Recommended | May be required at border |
| United States | Not required | Strongly recommended nonetheless |
| Canada | Not required | Strongly recommended nonetheless |
| India, China, Japan | Recommended | Consulate may request — check locally |
Always verify with your consulate
Insurance requirements can vary by consulate and change without notice. Even if insurance is not mandatory for your nationality, the border officer on arrival can request proof of medical coverage. Having a valid policy is always the safer choice.
8. Additional documents for special cases
For children travelling with parents
- Birth certificate — original plus photocopy
- Child's own invitation letter and visa application form
- If travelling with one parent — notarised consent letter from the absent parent
- If travelling with a third party — notarised consent letters from both parents
For former Russian citizens / born in the USSR
- Cover letter stating the date of renunciation of Russian citizenship or date of immigration
- Some consulates require copy of old Soviet or Ukrainian passport
- Apply directly at the consulate — not through visa agencies
For double-entry visa applicants
- Proof of travel (flight or rail ticket) showing exit to and return from a neighbouring country
- The second country must be in the near-abroad (CIS states, Baltic states) or require Russian transit (China, Mongolia)
For stays longer than 3 months
- Some consulates require an HIV-negative test certificate for visa applications covering stays exceeding 90 days
9. Most common document mistakes — and how to avoid them
- Filling the form before getting the invitation — you need the host company details from the invitation to complete the form. Always get the invitation first.
- Name spelling mismatch — your name in the invitation, form and passport must be letter-for-letter identical. Copy it character by character.
- Date mismatch — travel dates on the form must fall within the period covered by the invitation. Even one day outside the range = rejection.
- Wrong host company details — enter the tour operator's details (from the invitation), not your hotel's name and address.
- Passport expiry miscalculation — 6 months from visa expiry, not from your return date. Double-check the arithmetic.
- Photo stapled instead of glued — the photo must be glued to the form. Staples leave marks on the photo and may cause rejection.
- Insurance not covering Russia — read your policy carefully. Some "worldwide" policies exclude Russia specifically.
- Applying too late — standard processing is 10–20 working days. Start at least 5–6 weeks before your trip.
Final check before submitting
Lay all documents side by side and verify: (1) name matches in every document, (2) dates are consistent, (3) photo is glued not stapled, (4) form is signed and dated by hand, (5) invitation is colour-printed, (6) insurance covers Russia for the full stay. If all five are correct — you are ready to submit.
